The Pekin is what’s called a true bantam, that is, a breed of miniature chicken which has no large fowl counterpart. They are rather round-shaped, and their carriage tilts forward, with the head slightly closer to the ground than their elaborate tail feathers. This ’tilt’ is a key characteristic of the Pekin but is seen mostly in show birds rather than back garden.
This breed is one of the breeds we recommend for people who want chickens for pets for children, or just some nice friendly, attractive birds for the back garden. They are easy to handle and very cuddly. They lay reasonably well of small cream coloured eggs but do spend a lot of time being broody. They make fantastic mothers so if you might want to see they cycle of life at some point this is the best way to do it at little cost.
