As the rain keeps on pouring and the mud keeps on increasing we get asked what can be used in peoples chicken runs.

We have started using Aubichick in our runs outside, it has prooved to be very absorbant and dries on the top again.

Another way would be using woodchip, but please be careful to use natural woodchip. The woodchip that is used for childrens play areas is treated and can cause problems with the chickens. We suggest speaking to a local tree surgeon to see if they could provide some for you.

Keep the area well raked and the rain will flush the poo away.

Gravel could also be a good ground covering or rubber chips.

A common question we get asked is ‘do we need to provide anything extra for our chickens in the winter?’

You do not need to provide heat for them during the winter months but you can provide the ingredients they need to make their own heat. You will find that chickens will eat a lot more during the winter, this is to increase their fat layer to keep themselves warm and also because their is less natural food source around the garden. Extra corn during the winter will help with this. We offer several mixed corns, some with added seeds offering different oil sources.

Also with the chickens paddling the wet and mud back into their coops it is important to clean the coop more often, making sure their bedding is always nice and dry.

Extra vitamins and minerals is also a nice additive for them during this time especially if your birds choose this time to moult, these can be added into the water or feed. Don’t hesitate to ask us for help and advice.

Sadly at this moment in time, 25/01, we are still within a 10km bird flu zone, which means that there is no movement of birds on top of the national housing declaration. We have been unable to sell any birds since the 2nd Dec which has been a nightmare for us seeing as we still have to feed our stock. A big thank you to all our customers who are still supporting us by buying their food and bedding, every little helps at the moment.

We are hopeful that the 10km zone may be lifted soon as DEFRA have been doing random testing to check the area is clear at the moment. As soon as this happens we will let you all know as there are lots of beautiful pure breed birds waiting for there new homes.

The first lot of hybrid laying hens will be available from around 16th Feb (date tbc) (bird flu permitting) these will be available on the website for pre-order over the next couple of days.

New Covid Lockdown Update – 01.11.20

We will continue to be open during the lockdown period as we sell an essential item ‘Animal Feed’. For your convenience we are changing our opening hours to help with the lockdown period, we will now be open 10-4pm everyday. Service will still be from the gate and there is a doorbell on the post to let us know you are there. 

Payments can be taken by cash, card or bank transfer. Items can also be ordered on our website and we are launching a courier service for delivery too. 

Our shop is fully stocked with poultry accessories and we have a wide range of feed and bedding.

Birds are still available if you are visiting to collect essential items. A list will be updated as often as possible but it may be wise to contact us to check availability. 

Please use the sanitiser available at the gate and respect the distancing rules whilst being served.  We hope everyone stays safe and we are here to help with your poultry should you need us.

We have 17 holiday boarding pens ready for your use. They each have their own coop and wood chipped run that is 4m x 4m each.

We charge £4 a night per pen ( not per bird) each pen can hold 8 large birds or 10 bantams.

Price includes bedding and feed. If you require us to give them any treats please supply them and we will make sure they get them.

Booking early for the summer holidays is essential as we were fully booked for the whole summer last year.
